"McCabe & Ms. Miller" - Trust, the Zoom Lens, and Stanley Kubrick

After the wonderful 35mm screening of McCabe & Mrs. Miller at the TIFF Lightbox, there was a Q & A with legendary Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond. I asked him a question regarding his use of the Angenieux 25-250mm zoom lens throughout McCabe & Mrs. Miller. He had a wonderful anecdote within his detailed answer. An answer that defined me and confirmed my belief in synchronicity. It surrounded the two constants in my own life: Trust and Stanley Kubrick:

When the film was released, Robert Altman was in a theatre watching “2001: A Space Odyssey” in London and little to his knowledge Stanley Kubrick was in the theatre next to him watching “McCabe & Mrs. Miller.” After the screening, Kubrick spoke to Altman about the film and mentioned the use of Zoom lenses. He asked Altman, “How do you get those wonderful zooms? I love them.” Altman replied, “Well, I just give that off to my Director of Photographer. Y'know, he sets up the lenses and I just tell him what the scene is.” And Kubrick, in some disbelief, replied: “And you trust him?”
